A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
