Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question contained details about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report determined that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
